Thyroid gland is known as a goiter (goiter). It may be diffuse, where the entire gland is enlarged, or nodular, the nodules on the gland causes enlargement. Goiter arises when the overstimulation of the thyroid gland by regulating hormone, TSH, causes an increase in thyroid cells and follicles. At other times, or inflammation of the growths on the thyroid gland increases in size.
